«Finding plastics floating in the sea and on the shore was the inspiration behind my current work. I want to question our thoughtless throwaway habits, and explore the interaction between the sea and this waste. Researching the sea gyros of floating plastic and the microbes that attach to them has fuelled my imagination.
The structural processes I use evolve naturally, working in sympathy with the plastic. I want to extract high value from waste material calling attention to the loss of potential and by ntroducing the idea of ‘worth’ questioning our waste culture.
The Elaboration Series are entities born of plastic, incubated by the sea, and realised with machine embroidery. Perceived anew with elevated potential, the plastic bag is reincarnated into a non-functional object of desire.» – Helen O’Shea
